What to Expect from a Sleep Study

What to Expect from A Sleep Study

Prior to your appointment to visit us, we ask our clients to fill out a sleep disorder questionnaire. This will provide us with a general idea of the quantity and quality of sleep you get at night. Please click here to go to our New Patient Forms.

How to Prepare for a Polysomnogram (PSG):

You will be informed in advanced of this. Your sleep will be evaluated, so to prepare, you have to:

  • Avoid napping on the said day of appointment
  • Avoid sedatives and stimulants for 24 hours (caffeine, alcohol, etc.)
  • On the night before the appointment, eat your regular evening meal and inform us of any special diet
  • On the day of appointment please avoid using any hair products
  • Bring your medications, paper works and sleep questionnaires with you
  • Bring any attire you are comfortable in (Please avoid silk materials)
  • Bring your maks if your are using Positive Airway Pressure Therapy (CPAP/BILEVEL)
  • Notify us of any disability that you have because we might require you to have a caregiver to assist you

How to prepare for Daytime Sleep Testing/Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT)/ Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT):

A MSLT/MWT is a nap test to evaluate your daytime sleepiness. There will be sensors on your head, chin, around your eyes in order to record sleep activity.

To prepare, please note the following:

  • Eat normally on the night before and morning of the appointment
  • Bring any attire you are comfortable in (Please avoid silk materials)
  • On the day of appointment please avoid using any hair products
  • Bring your medications, paper works and sleep questionnaires with you
  • Avoid sedatives and stimulants for 24 hours (caffeine, alcohol, etc.)
  • Avoid physical exertion, naps, or smoking on the day of the study
  • Notify us of any disability that you have because we might require you to have a caregiver to assist you
